A Juicy Favourite
If there’s one restaurant the Juice Film team returns to again and again (for a quick morning coffee, a long lazy brunch, a working lunch or a proper dinner with clients), it’s Between Us. Tucked into 176 Bree Street in the Cape Town CBD, this Mediterranean-influenced gem has earned its place on the Juicy shortlist through sheer consistency: beautiful food, a gorgeous room, and an easy, unhurried energy that works for any occasion.
Behind it are twin sisters Jesse and Jamie Friedberg, the duo who gave Cape Town Skinny Legs & All. Between Us is their next chapter, and it shows maturity in every detail.
The Space
Between Us is housed in a restored heritage building, and the design does exactly what good Cape Town interiors do: it honours the bones of the place while layering in warmth and personality. Exposed rustic walls meet custom wooden furniture, oversized fresh floral arrangements add colour and life, and the lighting is soft enough to make everything (the food, the people) look its best.
The street-facing terrace along Bree Street is a great spot when the weather plays along, which in spring and early summer it usually does. Inside, the room gets properly lively when full. It’s a room that knows how to hold a crowd.
The Food
The kitchen runs on a simple philosophy: seasonal, fresh, health-conscious, with Mediterranean and Italian influences threading through everything. Nothing on the menu tries too hard. It just works.
Breakfast and brunch bring polenta pancakes, avocado on Danish rye, signature scrambled eggs and proper porridge options. For lunch and dinner, the starters alone are worth a visit: warm olives, a crispy mushroom starter, blood orange with goat’s cheese, and a plum and beet combination that sounds unusual and tastes exactly right.

Mains lean into slow cooking and good produce. The yellowfin tuna Niçoise with crispy capers is a perennial favourite. The slow-cooked lamb with cannellini beans is proper comfort food done with restraint. Fresh handmade pasta is always on, and the thousand-layer potato chips (thick, ridiculously delish) have developed something of a cult following.
Leave room for dessert. The chocolate mousse is on point!

Between Us has the rare quality of working beautifully at every hour and for every occasion. We come with our clients. We come with friends, and sometimes alone for a quiet coffee. It’s on the shortlist for a reason, and that reason is consistency: in the cooking, the welcome and the space.
