Local Is Lekker: Five Cape Town Markets We Love

Fresh vegetables piled in baskets at a Cape Town farm market

We love a great market. Spend a weekend in Cape Town and you’ll find one for every mood: farm-fresh and polished, buzzy and festive, delightfully odd, or slow and scenic among the vines.

Between shoots, these are the five we keep going back to, and the ones we send our international crews to when they ask where the locals actually go.

Oranjezicht City Farm Market: local is lekker, with an international flair

Flower stall at Oranjezicht City Farm Market

If one market gives full meaning to “local is lekker”, this is it. Farmers, bakers and small producers bring their best, and you can taste the care in every stall.

Yet the crowd and the food have a worldly mix that makes it feel like Cape Town at its most cosmopolitan. Come hungry, grab a coffee, and take your time.

  • Market days: Saturday 08:00–14:30 · Sunday 08:30–14:30
  • Night market: Wednesday 16:00–21:30 (closed June and July)
  • Where: Corner of Granger Bay Boulevard and Dock Road, V&A Waterfront (new home since December 2025)

The Old Biscuit Mill: an old favourite

The Biscuit Mill in Woodstock never gets old. Great food, local craft and design, and that unmistakable buzz of a place Capetonians have loved for years.

A word to the wise: it can get a little festive as the afternoon wears on. Go early if you want to browse in peace, or stay late if you’re in the mood for a party.

  • Market days: Saturday 09:00–15:00 · Sunday 10:00–15:00, rain or shine
  • Where: 373–375 Albert Road, Woodstock
  • Parking: The market takes over the Mill’s parking on Saturdays. Use Uber or Bolt, or the all-day lot at the College of Cape Town opposite (Kent Street entrance, R20)
  • Good to know: ATMs and card machines on site; dogs on a leash welcome

Milnerton Market: treasure, trinkets and the truly strange

Milnerton is a rummager’s dream. Tables groan under bric-a-brac, the odd genuine antique, and things you’d never think to look for.

We’ve even spotted a set of false teeth. You never know what you’ll find, and that’s exactly the fun of it. Bring cash, patience and a sense of humour.

  • Market days: Saturday 07:00–14:00 · Sunday 07:00–15:00 · most public holidays 07:00–14:00 (not Christmas Day or Good Friday)
  • Where: Marine Drive (R27) and Milner Road, Milnerton
  • Good to know: Free entry and parking. It’s open-air and weather-dependent, so check before you go on a windy day

Hout Bay craft market: gifts, good food and live music

Looking for a gift with a story? The Hout Bay market is the place. Local makers, handmade pieces and plenty you won’t find in a mall.

Grab something delicious and local to eat, find a spot near the stage and let a great band set the pace for the afternoon.

  • Market days: Friday 09:30–21:00 · Saturday, Sunday and public holidays 09:30–17:00
  • Where: Bay Harbour Market, 31 Harbour Road, Hout Bay
  • Good to know: Live acts on the sound stage at weekends. No pets, apart from registered guide and support dogs

Lourensford: a market among the vines

For something a little different, head out to Lourensford wine estate in Somerset West. It’s a market experience set against mountains and vineyards, and the trendiest weekend hangout spot in the Helderberg.

Come for the stalls, stay for a glass of wine and the view. It’s well worth the drive out of town.

  • Market days (summer): Friday 17:00–22:00 · Saturday and Sunday 11:00–16:00
  • Where: Lourensford Wine Estate, Lourensford Road, Somerset West
  • Good to know: Market entry is free; R30 per car to enter the estate. Dogs on a leash welcome
  • Website: lfhm.co.za

See you at the market

Each market shows a different side of Cape Town, and together they capture why we love making work here. Check opening days and times before you go, as they can change with the season.

Got a favourite to add to this list? Tell us. We’re always up for another market morning.

A Juice tip

These five are our all-year-round regulars, but they’re only the opening act. Cape Town has a market for almost every mood and season, from summer night markets to festive pop-ups, so keep an eye on What’s New for the ones that come and go.

Our golden rules: go early, bring a tote bag and a little cash, and never, ever eat breakfast first.

Feeling ambitious? Try the Saturday market crawl: treasure hunting at Milnerton when the gates open at 7, brunch at Oranjezicht, then a late browse at the Biscuit Mill before it wraps up at 3.
